Tina Turner Musical to Open on Broadway Next Fall

Tina,” a jukebox musical about the turbulent life of the rock star Tina Turner, is coming to Broadway.

The show, with the full title “Tina: The Tina Turner Musical,” will open next fall, the producers said Wednesday. They did not announce a specific date or a theater.

The musical has been running in London since March, and a second production is scheduled to open in Hamburg, Germany, next March, so Broadway will be the show’s third simultaneous production. The London cast is led by Adrienne Warren, a Tony nominee for “Shuffle Along”; she is widely expected to star in the New York production as well, but casting has not yet been determined.

The jukebox musical has become a staple of Broadway, with “Beautiful: The Carole King Musical,” “Head Over Heels” (The Go-Go’s) and “Summer: The Donna Summer Musical” currently running. “The Cher Show” and “Ain’t Too Proud” (The Temptations) will open later this season.

“Tina” is written by the playwright Katori Hall (“The Mountaintop”), along with Frank Ketelaar and Kees Prins, and is directed by Phyllida Lloyd (“Mamma Mia!”). It is produced by Stage Entertainment, a European company; Ms. Turner, now 78, is associated with the production.
